About Us

For a safer tomorrow...

We live in what is most often referred to as one of the 'best' countries in the world and, within Canada we live in what we believe to be one of the 'safest' communities.

There are, however, many homes in our Halton community where it is neither the 'best' place to be nor the 'safest' place to be.

In these homes women and children are often terrorized by the abuse they are subjected to at the hands of those individuals who are charged with their care or who have pledged their great affection. Violence perpetrated by anyone, be it man, woman or child can not and should not be tolerated.

It is as a result of many of these unsafe environments that Halton Women's Place exists. Our mission is to end violence against women and we believe that this can be best achieved not only by the provision of our safe shelters but by an overall community strategy and commitment to stopping violence.

Halton Women's Place has operated since 1980. We attempt through public education and advocacy to effect social change, which will lead us to 'a safer tomorrow'.

Within our organization we are surrounded with individuals whose first concern is 'how can we best meet the needs of our clients', whether it be:

  • the front line employees who need to assist the women and children in finding those elusive resources, arranging for the safe arrival to the shelters of the many families, while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere in near impossible situations;
  • the Program Supervisors who must make difficult decisions in challenging circumstances;
  • administrative employees who are often called upon to do those jobs that are not in their job descriptions;
  • volunteers whose efforts provide driving, envelope stuffing, story telling, another ear to listen, and another pair of hands to help on a regular basis for clients and employees;
  • and Board Members who strive to represent the community.

This essential service would not be possible without the generosity of people and organizations in our community.

We are dependent upon this support to provide safe shelter in this community. Every dollar spent in the provision of service at Halton Women's Place requires community support. We must raise 25% of our operating budget annually to meet the day to day needs of the shelter. Cut-backs in our government funding have meant that we are increasingly more reliant on the goodwill of our community to ensure that safe shelter is available for abused women and their children. The fact that we are able to continue our service demonstrates this community's commitment to not only ensuring that there is safe shelter available in the community but we believe it demonstrates a desire to see violence in our community stopped.

We express our appreciation to all our donors and supporters. You provide the hope for a safer tomorrow. If you would like to be part of our effort to end violence through donations or volunteer service, please contact us. We welcome your active support.
